Project Overview

Blackbook Ink has partnered with Madang Avenue Public School to deliver a growing series of school murals across the campus enhancing multiple learning environments through site-responsive, student-focused artwork.

To date, 9 murals have been Delivered by experienced mural artists in Sydney, spanning stairwells, specialist learning areas, and shared spaces each tailored to its audience while contributing to a broader visual identity across the school.

The Approach

The project was delivered through a community mural process as a multi-area rollout, with each mural designed to respond to its specific location, function, and student group.

Rather than applying a single style across all works, the approach focused on:

  • Adapting visual styles to suit different age groups and learning needs

  • Activating high-traffic areas such as stairwells

  • Creating meaningful artwork for specialised education spaces

  • Embedding cultural storytelling through collaboration

Stairwell Activation (5 Murals)

A series of murals were installed across multiple stairwell levels transforming transitional spaces into engaging visual experiences.

These works:

  • Break up otherwise plain vertical circulation areas

  • Introduce colour, movement, and identity across levels

  • Create moments of interest as students move through the school

Early Learning — Preschool Mural

A dedicated mural was delivered for the preschool area, designed specifically for younger students.

The approach featured:

  • Bright, colourful palette

  • Cartoon-style characters and forms

  • Playful, approachable imagery suited to early learning environments

This creates a welcoming and stimulating space tailored to younger age groups.

Support Unit Mural

A mural was also developed for the school’s support unit designed with consideration for the students who use the space.

The artwork contributes to:

  • A more engaging and positive learning environment

  • A sense of identity within a specialised education setting

  • Visual stimulation without overwhelming the space

Indigenous Collaboration Mural

A key component of the project was a collaborative mural created with Indigenous artist Michael Fardon.

This reflects our approach to collaborative school mural projects and culturally informed design developed through consultation.

This work features:

  • A bat, owl, and possum each representing different classes within the school

  • Cultural storytelling embedded into the design

  • A collaborative approach that ensures authenticity and respect

The mural strengthens cultural representation within the school while connecting students to both identity and story.

The Outcome

The mural program has transformed Madang Avenue Public School into a more dynamic and engaging environment where each area reflects its purpose and audience.

The impact:

  • Activates multiple areas across the campus with tailored artwork

  • Supports different learning environments through appropriate design styles

  • Embeds cultural collaboration and storytelling

  • Enhances the overall student experience through visual engagement

The result is a layered mural program that responds to the diversity of the school community.

Similar education-focused outcomes can also be seen in our Ambarvale High School mural project and Fairvale Public School collaborative cultural mural

which also use site-responsive and student-engaged approaches.

Why It Works

This project succeeds through its flexibility and responsiveness.

By adapting each mural to its context, Madang Avenue Public School has:

  • Avoided a one-size-fits-all approach

  • Delivered meaningful outcomes for different student groups

  • Activated both major and transitional spaces

  • Created a cohesive yet varied visual environment
