Project Overview
Blackbook Ink was engaged by Fairvale Public School to design and deliver a large-scale mural that reflects the cultural diversity and identity of its student community.
The project was grounded in student engagement and participation, with the aim of creating an artwork that is not only visually impactful, but genuinely representative of the school’s community.
The Approach
At the core of the project was a collaborative process with students.
Workshops were facilitated where students created drawings inspired by their cultural backgrounds, personal stories, and lived experiences. These artworks became the foundation for the final mural design.
Our role was to:
-
Translate student-created imagery into a cohesive, large-scale composition
-
Retain the authenticity and intent behind each contribution
-
Ensure the final artwork functioned effectively as a public-facing mural
-
Deliver a professional, durable outcome suitable for a school environment
Students were also involved in the early stages of painting, giving them a direct, hands-on connection to the artwork and its creation.
The Outcome
The completed mural stands as a meaningful representation of Fairvale Public School’s diverse community shaped by the students themselves and brought together into a unified visual narrative.
The impact:
-
Strengthens student ownership and connection to the school environment
-
Celebrates cultural diversity in an authentic and inclusive way
-
Enhances the visual identity of the school
-
Creates a lasting sense of pride among students, staff, and the wider community
This is more than a mural it is a shared story embedded into the fabric of the school.
Why It Works
Projects that involve students in the creative process generate deeper, long-term value.
By embedding participation into the design and delivery, Fairvale Public School has:
-
Created a mural with genuine meaning and relevance
-
Encouraged creativity and expression among students
-
Built stronger connections between the artwork and its audience
-
Delivered a project that extends beyond aesthetics into education and engagement
