Mural frequently asked questions
How much does a mural cost?
Mural costs vary depending on the wall size, artwork detail, surface condition, access requirements, materials, location and whether concept design is required. As a general guide, mural projects can range from $1,500 to $50,000+, with large-scale public art or commercial projects sometimes exceeding this range. See our full mural costs guide for a complete breakdown.
Do you provide concept designs?
Yes. We provide concept designs and visual mockups before painting begins. This helps clarify the artwork direction, layout, colour palette and how the mural will work within the space. Revisions are included as part of our process.
What's the difference between a mural and graffiti art?
Murals are a broad term for large-scale wall paintings and can be created in many styles, including graffiti, street art, realism or illustration. Graffiti art specifically refers to aerosol-based, style-driven artwork rooted in street culture. We deliver both depending on your brief.
Do you work across Australia?
Yes. Blackbook Ink delivers mural projects across Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra, Adelaide, Newcastle, Wollongong, the Gold Coast and regional areas depending on project scope.
How long does a mural take?
Timelines depend on the size, detail and complexity of the artwork. Smaller murals may take a few days, while larger murals, school projects, public art walls or multi-site projects can take longer once concept design, approvals, access and installation are included.
What surfaces can murals be painted on?
Murals can be applied to brick, concrete, render, timber, metal, Colorbond, MDF and most prepared surfaces. Surface condition and preparation affect the final result and longevity. We assess every wall before quoting.
Can I be involved in the design process?
Yes. Many of our projects — particularly school and community murals — are developed through consultation and collaboration. You’ll receive mockups and have the opportunity to provide feedback before painting begins.
Can murals help reduce vandalism?
Yes. Professionally designed murals significantly reduce unwanted tagging by improving the visual value of a site and creating a sense of ownership. Our Sydney Water anti-graffiti mural has remained largely graffiti-free for over 10 years.
