Ferguson Grounds Mural - Camden NSW

Year

Project Overview

Blackbook Ink was engaged to design and deliver a large-scale public art mural for Ferguson Grounds in Camden, creating an artwork that responds to the site’s rich agricultural history, sporting legacy, and strong connection to local identity.

The project formed part of a broader vision to enhance the public domain through place-specific artwork delivered by experienced mural artists in Sydney that reflects the character of Camden while creating a visually engaging landmark for the community.

The Approach

The concept was developed through a community mural process and a site specific mural design approach

Drawing from research and consultation, the mural incorporated themes connected to Ferguson Grounds and the wider Camden region, including:

  • The area’s agricultural heritage, represented through merino sheep and rams
  • References to the Camden Rams and the site’s long association with cricket dating back to 1843
  • Apples and roses, reflecting Camden’s historic rural identity
  • A warm golden sunset palette inspired by the local landscape

Rather than treating the mural as decoration, the design was approached as visual storytelling, embedding local narratives into a cohesive artwork designed specifically for the site.

The Outcome

The completed mural transformed Ferguson Grounds into a vibrant public asset that contributes to both the identity and experience of the space.

The impact:

  • Enhances the visual character of the sporting precinct
  • Strengthens connection to Camden’s heritage and community identity
  • Creates a distinctive landmark within the public domain
  • Activates the site through large-scale, place-responsive artwork
  • Contributes to civic pride and a stronger sense of place

Similar place-based outcomes can also be seen in our Camden Rotary Platypus mural and West Ryde Rainbow Lorikeet mural which also use locally relevant storytelling to strengthen place identity.

Why It Works

Successful public art responds to place.

By grounding the design in local history, landscape, and community relevance, the Ferguson Grounds mural has:

  • Transformed an everyday piece of infrastructure into a meaningful public artwork
  • Connected sport, heritage, and landscape through a unified visual narrative
  • Delivered long-term value through durable, site-specific design
  • Created a mural that feels embedded in Camden, rather than imposed on it
  • Supported principles also seen in our anti-graffiti mural solutions and use of protective mural coatings
