Camden Rotary Platypus Mural - Camden NSW

Project Overview

Blackbook Ink was engaged to design and deliver a public art mural for the Rotary Club of Camden in Camden, creating an artwork that reflects local identity, environmental character and community values.

Rather than applying a predetermined concept, the project began with a collaborative stakeholder process to ensure the artwork was informed by those most connected to the site and its purpose.

Delivered by experienced mural artists in Sydney the project formed part of a broader approach to creating place-responsive artwork shaped by consultation and community relevance.

The Approach

A stakeholder workshop was held with the Rotary board to explore themes, local references and the most appropriate design direction for the project.

This community mural process helped shape a concept grounded in place and community meaning, with discussions focused on how the mural could best represent Camden’s identity while creating a strong site-specific mural design for the location.

Through this process, the platypus emerged as the central concept, selected for its connection to the Nepean River and its strong association with the Camden area.

Our role was to:

  • Facilitate stakeholder input and translate ideas into a clear design direction
  • Develop a site-specific mural concept informed by place and local symbolism
  • Create a cohesive artwork that balanced narrative, aesthetics and functionality
  • Deliver a durable public artwork designed for long-term impact

Stakeholder input was not simply part of the process, it directly shaped the final artwork.

The Outcome

The completed mural transformed the site into a distinctive public artwork that reflects both place and community identity.

The impact:

  • Strengthens connection to Camden’s environmental and cultural character
  • Creates a meaningful landmark shaped through stakeholder collaboration
  • Enhances the visual identity of the site
  • Contributes to civic pride and a stronger sense of place
  • Delivers a permanent visual asset embedded in the public domain

Similar place-based outcomes can also be seen in our Ferguson Grounds Camden mural and West Ryde Rainbow Lorikeet mural which also use local storytelling to strengthen place identity.

Why It Works

Strong public art often begins with listening.

By engaging stakeholders early in the process, the Camden Rotary mural:

  • Built the concept through collaboration rather than assumption
  • Grounded the design in local knowledge and community values
  • Created stronger ownership and connection to the finished artwork
  • Delivered a site-responsive mural with long-term meaning and relevance

This approach also aligns with principles used in our anti-graffiti mural solutions and use of protective mural coatingsfor long-term durability.
