Turning a Repeatedly Vandalised Wall into a 10-Year Graffiti-Free Outcome

In 2016, Blackbook Ink delivered an anti graffiti mural in Sutherland, Sydney for Sydney Water, transforming a 100-metre-long wall that had become a constant target for tagging.

Despite ongoing graffiti removal and repainting, the wall continued to attract vandalism, creating an ongoing maintenance issue and negatively impacting the surrounding area.

This project is a strong example of our work as mural artists in Sydney, using large-scale public art to solve real-world challenges.

The Challenge: Ongoing Graffiti in a High-Exposure Area

The site presented a number of challenges:

• 100m long wall in a highly visible location
• Repeated graffiti tagging and vandalism
• Ongoing removal and repainting proving ineffective
• Increasing maintenance costs over time

Like many similar sites across Sydney, the wall had become a known target, meaning traditional graffiti removal alone was not solving the problem.

Our Approach: Graffiti-Led Deterrence Strategy

Instead of continuing the cycle of graffiti removal, we implemented a different approach — one that works with graffiti culture rather than against it.

We brought together a group of 11 respected graffiti writers to create a large-scale, cohesive production across the full length of the wall.

Project Execution Included:

• Large-scale graffiti lettering (pieces) painted by experienced writers
• Colour-matched backgrounds across the entire 100m wall
• Integrated characters and visual elements to connect the composition
• A unified, end-to-end mural design

The entire wall was designed to feel like one complete artwork — not separate sections or painted-over surfaces.

The Outcome: 10 Years Without Graffiti

The impact of the project was immediate.

The wall transformed from a vandalised surface into a visually engaging piece of public artwork that improved the surrounding space.

We received strong positive feedback from the local community — across all age groups — recognising the improvement and appreciating the artwork.
