Project Overview

Blackbook Ink partnered with Caringbah High School to deliver a collaborative mural project that combined hands-on education with creating public art.

The goal was not only to create a visually impactful mural, but to give students direct involvement in the creative process building skills, confidence, and a deeper understanding of mural-making techniques.

The Approach

The project was structured as a staged engagement process, beginning with in-school workshops and culminating in a student-assisted mural installation.

1. Workshops & Skill Development

We attended the school across multiple sessions to run practical workshops with students, covering:

  • Spray painting techniques and control

  • Understanding caps and different paint outputs

  • Mural planning and execution methods

  • How to transfer designs onto walls

These sessions were designed to demystify the mural process and give students real, applicable skills.

2. Concept Development

Students were invited to create drawings based on themes and ideas discussed during the workshops.

These artworks formed the foundation of the final concept, which we refined into a cohesive, illustrated mural design ensuring the students’ ideas remained central to the outcome.

3. Collaborative Delivery

Students were involved throughout the execution phase, working alongside Blackbook Ink artists to bring the mural to life.

This included:

  • Preparing the wall surface

  • Marking out the design using a grid method

  • Painting sections of the mural under guidance and supervision

The process ensured students experienced every stage of a real-world mural project.

4. Final Refinement

Following the collaborative painting phase, our team returned for a final pass refining details, sharpening the artwork, and ensuring a professional, polished finish across the entire mural.

The Outcome

The completed mural is a vibrant, student-informed artwork that reflects both creativity and collaboration.

The impact:

  • Provides students with hands-on artistic skills and real-world experience

  • Builds confidence through participation in a large-scale outcome

  • Strengthens connection between students and their school environment

  • Delivers a high-quality, lasting visual asset for the campus

The mural stands as both a creative achievement and an educational outcome.

Why It Works

Projects that combine education with delivery create far greater long-term value.

By embedding workshops and student involvement into the process, Caringbah High School has:

  • Turned the mural into a learning experience, not just an outcome

  • Encouraged creativity, collaboration, and ownership

  • Activated students in a meaningful, hands-on way

  • Delivered a professional artwork with genuine student input
