Project Overview

Blackbook Ink partnered with Blackwell Public School to deliver a series of murals across the campus enhancing the school environment through a cohesive, site-specific visual identity.

To date, 7 murals have been installed across the school, with several works centred around the kookaburra a recurring symbol embedded throughout the campus via plaques, sculptures, and existing visual elements.

The project focused on strengthening this identity and extending it into large-scale artwork.

The Approach

Rather than introducing an entirely new concept, the approach was to build upon what already existed within the school.

The kookaburra was identified as a key unifying element already present across the grounds and recognised by the school community.

Our role was to:

  • Translate this identity into impactful mural form

  • Create consistency across multiple locations

  • Ensure each mural felt connected, while still unique to its placement

  • Integrate seamlessly with the school’s existing visual language

Each mural was designed in response to its specific location whether a feature wall, walkway, or shared student space.

A Cohesive Visual Language

Across the 7 murals, the kookaburra became a central motif supported by complementary elements such as native flora and environmental textures.

This approach allowed the murals to:

  • Reinforce a recognisable theme across the campus

  • Create visual continuity between different areas

  • Strengthen the school’s identity through repetition and variation

Rather than isolated artworks, the murals function collectively as a connected visual system.

The Outcome

The mural series has transformed Blackwell Public School into a more cohesive and engaging environment where artwork reflects and reinforces the school’s identity.

The impact:

  • Strengthens a clear and recognisable visual theme across the campus

  • Enhances everyday student spaces with engaging artwork

  • Builds school pride through consistent identity markers

  • Integrates art seamlessly with existing features and symbols

The result is a school environment where art feels embedded, not added.

Why It Works

The success of this project lies in its simplicity and clarity.

By focusing on a strong, existing symbol, Blackwell Public School has:

  • Avoided disconnected or competing visual themes

  • Created consistency across multiple mural sites

  • Reinforced identity through repetition and familiarity

  • Delivered long-term value through a scalable concept
