Birrong Public School Murals - Birrong, NSW

Year

Project Overview

Blackbook Ink has partnered with Birrong Public School since 2018 to deliver an evolving, campus-wide mural program transforming the school into a fully immersive, visually engaging learning environment.

What began as a single mural has grown into a long-term collaboration, with 20+ murals installed across the campus, embedding a consistent visual identity throughout the school.

Today, the campus operates as a visual playground”, where students encounter artwork at every turn across walkways, demountables, shared spaces, and key learning areas.

The Approach

The project has been delivered as a staged rollout over multiple years, allowing the visual identity to grow organically alongside the school.

Each mural was designed to:

  • Respond to its specific location within the campus

  • Contribute to an overarching nature-based theme

  • Maintain consistency while introducing variation and discovery

  • Enhance everyday student movement through the space

Rather than focusing on isolated feature walls, the approach was to activate the entire school environment from major facades to smaller, unexpected surfaces.

A Living Collection of Native Wildlife

The core theme centres around Australian flora and fauna, creating both visual impact and educational value.

Murals across the campus feature:

  • Rainbow lorikeets

  • Kookaburras

  • Galahs

  • Fairy wrens

  • Possums

  • Blue tongue lizards

Each artwork introduces movement, colour, and storytelling turning previously blank or overlooked areas into engaging visual moments.

Expanding the Environment

As the program evolved, the scope extended into more diverse and creative applications across the school.

Playground Activation

A graffiti-inspired extension of earlier works introduced bold, energetic compositions featuring native birds in motion, including galahs interacting mid-flight.
These murals inject energy into high-use student areas and encourage interaction.

Water Tank Transformation

A functional structure was transformed into a storytelling piece, featuring a blue tongue lizard reaching toward a snail along a winding branch adding character and curiosity to the environment.

Everyday Spaces Reimagined

Murals have been integrated into:

  • Pathways leading to the library

  • Walls of demountable classrooms

  • Transitional walkways and overlooked surfaces

This approach ensures that art is embedded throughout the daily experience of the school, not confined to select areas.

The Outcome

Birrong Public School has been transformed into a cohesive, highly engaging visual environment that continues to evolve over time.

The impact:

  • Creates a vibrant and stimulating atmosphere across the entire campus

  • Strengthens school identity through a consistent visual language

  • Encourages curiosity and interaction among students

  • Integrates learning through environmental storytelling

  • Builds long-term value through staged, scalable mural delivery

The school now functions as a fully activated creative environment, where art plays a central role in the student experience.

Why It Works

This project demonstrates the power of long-term collaboration and strategic rollout.

By continuing to build on an established visual direction, Birrong Public School has:

  • Avoided one-off, disconnected artworks

  • Created cohesion across a large and varied campus

  • Delivered ongoing impact rather than a single moment in time

  • Positioned art as part of the school’s identity, not an addition
