Project Overview

Blackbook Ink was engaged by Bankstown Public School to transform key areas of the campus through a series of murals turning previously overlooked spaces into engaging, story-driven environments for students.

The project focused on two primary areas:

  • A bare brick toilet block, reimagined as a large-scale narrative mural

  • The COLA assembly space, activated with a bold, school-branded artwork

Together, these works enhance both everyday student areas and key gathering spaces across the school.

The Approach

The concept centred around imagination, learning, and creativity using storytelling as a way to connect with students and bring energy into the environment.

Rather than a static image, the toilet block mural was designed as a continuous visual journey, wrapping across multiple walls and unfolding as students move through the space.

Toilet Block Mural — A Story in Motion

Previously a plain brick structure, the toilet block was transformed into a vibrant, cloud-filled scene featuring a series of interconnected characters and moments.

The composition includes:

  • A rainbow lorikeet wearing a wizard hat, holding a wand and reading a book

  • A cockatoo in flight, pulling a trail of books behind it as if carried through the sky

  • A winged book, reinforcing themes of imagination and learning

  • A continuation onto adjacent walls featuring a wombat and kangaroo, grounding the story in Australian wildlife

All elements are set within a soft, flowing cloud background, creating movement and cohesion across the entire structure.

The result is a mural that reveals itself as you walk around it encouraging curiosity and engagement.

COLA Mural — School Identity & Energy

A second mural was delivered beneath the school’s COLA, a central space used for assemblies and daily gatherings.

This piece takes a more graphic and energetic approach, featuring:

  • A hand holding a paintbrush, symbolising creativity and expression

  • Bold paint splatter elements, adding colour and movement

  • The school’s name prominently displayed, reinforcing identity within a key communal space

Positioned where the school comes together, this mural acts as a visual anchor for assemblies and events.

The Outcome

The project has transformed previously underutilised and functional spaces into vibrant, engaging parts of the school environment.

The impact:

  • Turns a plain utility building into a memorable, student-focused artwork

  • Encourages imagination through narrative-driven design

  • Enhances a central assembly space with strong school identity

  • Creates a more visually engaging and cohesive campus experience

These murals now function as both creative features and everyday touchpoints for students.

Why It Works

This project succeeds by combining storytelling with strategic placement.

By activating both a transitional space (toilet block) and a key gathering area (COLA), Bankstown Public School has:

  • Elevated overlooked areas into meaningful visual experiences

  • Reinforced creativity and learning through design

  • Strengthened school identity in high-visibility locations

  • Delivered long-term value through durable, site-specific artwork
