Project Overview
Blackbook Ink was commissioned by Glenwood Public School to design and deliver a large-scale mural that reflects the diverse cultural backgrounds of its student community.
The project centred around representation, inclusivity, and student contribution creating an artwork that brings together multiple cultures into a unified visual narrative.
The Approach
The process began within the classroom, with teachers guiding students to create drawings that represented their individual cultural backgrounds.
These drawings became the foundation of the project.
From this collection, we analysed and interpreted the imagery identifying a recurring theme of animals and flora as symbolic representations of culture. This insight allowed us to unify a wide range of ideas into a single, cohesive concept.
Concept Development
The final mural was developed in a stylised, illustrated approach balancing clarity, vibrancy, and accessibility for a school environment.
Each cultural reference was carefully selected and integrated into the composition:
-
India — Tiger
-
Bangladesh — Water Lily
-
Philippines — Sampaguita Flower
-
China — Dragon
-
Fiji — Turtle
-
Lebanon — Hyena
-
Ukraine — Sunflower
-
Australia — Koala
-
Africa — Elephant
These elements were arranged to feel interconnected, ensuring the mural reads as a unified piece rather than separate symbols.
The Outcome
The completed mural is a vibrant and meaningful representation of Glenwood Public School’s multicultural identity.
The impact:
-
Celebrates the diversity of the student community in a visual, accessible way
-
Creates a strong sense of inclusion and belonging
-
Enhances the school’s environment with a culturally relevant artwork
-
Provides students with a lasting connection to the mural through their initial contributions
The artwork stands as a shared reflection of the school’s identity shaped by its students.
