Project Overview

Blackbook Ink was engaged by Campbelltown Public School to deliver two murals that reflect both the natural environment and historical identity of the local area.

The project focused on creating artwork that feels directly connected to place blending recognisable local wildlife with references to Campbelltown’s history.

The Approach

Each mural was designed to represent a different aspect of the area, ensuring the artworks felt both meaningful and relevant to the school community.

Rather than generic imagery, the concept was grounded in:

  • Wildlife that students regularly see within the school grounds

  • Historical references that connect to the broader Campbelltown region

  • A balance between education, storytelling, and visual impact

Mural 1 — Wildlife & Local History

The first mural features a rainbow lorikeet and sulphur-crested cockatoo in the foreground two bird species commonly seen around the school.

Behind them, the composition incorporates references to historic buildings from Campbelltown’s past, creating a layered narrative that connects students to the area’s heritage.

This combination of past and present allows the mural to function as both:

  • A reflection of the current environment

  • A visual link to the history of the local community

Mural 2 — Koalatown Identity

The second mural centres around a koala, referencing Campbelltown’s reputation as Koalatown” due to its population of koalas living in the surrounding natural environment.

This piece reinforces:

  • Local ecological identity

  • Awareness of native wildlife

  • A strong, recognisable symbol tied to the region

The Outcome

The murals have created a meaningful visual connection between the school and its surrounding environment.

The impact:

  • Strengthens student awareness of local wildlife and history

  • Enhances school spaces with relevant, place-based artwork

  • Creates a sense of pride and connection to the Campbelltown area

  • Provides a visually engaging environment grounded in real-world context

These artworks now act as educational and cultural touchpoints within the school.

Why It Works

This project succeeds through its focus on place-based storytelling.

By combining local fauna with historical references, Campbelltown Public School has:

  • Created murals that feel authentic to their location

  • Strengthened community identity within the school environment

  • Delivered artwork with both visual and educational value

  • Avoided generic design in favour of meaningful, site-specific content
